I also saw this weekend The Fall - Oh My God! What a film! While watching this film I experienced a sense of pure euphoric delight that I haven’t remembered feeling since I was a child - it’s really exceptional.

I’ve been playing with the idea lately of winning things - contests, drawings - of wonderful unexpected surprises - of hearing “You Won!” and it being something new, delightful, wonderfully adventurous. I’ve been resting in the feeling of what it would be like to hear those words and then experience the fruits of the winning. So, a few days ago my husband says “Guess what? We won tickets to see The Joshua Light Show! I entered our name in a drawing and we were 1st runner up.” Before I started playing with this idea I’ve never won anything from a drawing, contest, ect.

Even though I was raised in the rural farmland of Wisconsin, it took moving to New York City to discover my relationship to plant life. Surrounded by forests and cattle fields, I never questioned my connection with Earth. The vibrancy, love, and wisdom of nature was my basic experience of the world.

When I arrived in the hustle of Manhattan, I was instantly swept into the wave of activity that surges through this city. But, as the exoticness faded and I began to create my life within the constant barrage of human motion, plants became my touchstones to the natural world and profound teachers of the deeper connections we all share.

It began with a lovely Kalanchoe. When I arrived home with it, I sat in the darkness of my tiny room and honored its presence in my life. The plant communicated that it was here to ground and support my energy, and I affirmed my responsibility to love and care for it. I called upon the devas responsible for the Kalanchoe’s creation and affirmed that it vibrate with highest potential and grow into its deepest expression of health and vitality.

Soon after, all the Kalanchoe’s tiny orange flowers died. The top leaves withered and branches began to slump. I panicked and asked what was happening. “This is a process of re-creation. This plant must shed the energy of its previous creation in order to fully grow into its original potential,” I heard from the devas. Of course, my mind was quite skeptical. How could a plant that looked seemingly healthy need to go through this process? I was absolutely forbidden to pull off any of the withering leaves. Whenever anxious fingers would try to “fix” anything on the plant, there was a resounding “NO! Leave me be!” so animate that I quickly withdrew. I nervously claimed my role as witness.

In the following weeks I saw the Kalanchoe metamorphose. When I bought it, the plant was a pleasant, healthy little being, but now it was bursting with a wild power and vigor. Where leaves had wilted, new growth sprouted forth like buds shooting from the soil after a long winter. I had to put the plant into a new pot soon after buying it as it was rapidly growing out of its old one. Shockingly, where the leaves and branches had naturally fallen off were the areas that the strongest, healthiest growth was taking place. In its larger pot the plant easily grew three times its original size. It took on an exotic, expanded beauty, covered with shiny, deep green leaves and branches teeming with sprouts.

Months later, as the plant continued its radiant growth, I was journeying through a healing crisis. My ego protections and personal securities were being uprooted, and it was difficult to feel grounded in the middle of this transition. I was feeling especially assaulted by my mind one day, struggling to stop the constant battery of an ego terrified to let go. I felt truly powerless and didn’t know where to turn to release the whirlwind inside. “Go to the plant,” I heard clearly above the banter.

I sat in front of the Kalanchoe with my eyes closed. Energy like a cool mountain stream washed through me. The image of the plant resting inside my skull filled my mind’s eye and peace overtook me. The plant faded into the image of a snow-capped mountain, than a pink meadow flower, and the three images merged into one. I realized that even this Kalanchoe in a New York City apartment was inherently linked to all of nature.

I was then led to the image of a majestic tree taking root within my body, with all seven chakras sparkling jewels whirling within the trunk and branches. It was surrounded by a great crystal dome, vibrating with tremendous love and truth. “This is the tree of life. It lives within you. Go forth with it today,” was whispered within me. I took a deep breath and opened my eyes. The image of the tree glowing with life within me was so overpowering that my mind was silenced. I felt bathed in loving, clean energy as if I were standing on a mountain top.

As I gathered my belongings and walked to the subway, I saw my body as the straight, strong, radiant tree. No matter how I moved, it retained its majestic stature. The image stayed with me throughout the day. I experienced deep peace, self-love, and a knowing that all was well. To this day, whenever I feel I am going to fall apart or can’t go on to another breath, I remember the tree of life growing through my bones, and I am brought to truth.

The Kalanchoe expressed that even when we feel completely disconnected from anything sacred or holy, it resides with us always. We are the children of earth in a breath-taking, awe-inspiring sense, grander than we have allowed ourselves to know. Just as the potted plant in my apartment is of the same material as a redwood tree in California, each individual is of the same divine material as the earth. When we turn away from the earth, we stop growing. We become locked in the illusions of the mundane and shut ourselves down to the richness of our original roots.

If we cannot return to the earth for our answers, than where can we go? We are standing within the power to regenerate ourselves into who we were meant to be, and the Earth is waiting for us to request its assistance.

Just as the Kalanchoe needed to shed its previous energy to take on its full potential, so must we let go of our old ideas about ourselves. Nature is a generous teacher that asks only for our receptivity. When we open our hearts to the seemingly simplest of Earth’s creations, the Mother brings her basket of wonder right to our door. It is then we exhale into deeper expression and claim the wild, radiant, unencumbered power that makes us daughters of the Earth.

You are made in the image and likeness of the Universal Intelligence. What is true of It is also true of you. Whatever qualities It has, you are constantly demonstrating those qualities as well. This Universal Intelligence is experiencing itself through you. Your desires for expansion are It seeking to experience Itself in a way that has never been.

You are a fingerprint of Universal Intelligence and it is infinitely creative. If this force can create galaxies, billions of human beings with not a single one exactly the same, and an infinite variety of plants and animals, then it is very clear that it is impossible for this Source to run out of creative genius. It is Creative Genius embodying in form constantly. And because you are made in the likeness of this Genius, there is no limit to what you can create.

It does not matter if the majority of your life so far has had tremendous tragedy, sadness, trauma, grief, and quiet desperation. YOU HAVE THE POWER RIGHT IN THIS VERY MOMENT TO BEGIN TO CREATE PEACE, LOVE, JOY, CELEBRATION, AND ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT MAKES YOUR HEART SING. And even if you have had plenty of peace and love in your life, there is truly NO CEILING on how much you can keep experiencing. THERE ARE NO LIMITS ON HOW MUCH HAPPINESS, LOVE, FULFILLMENT, ECSTASY, JOY, AND PEACE YOU CAN EXPERIENCE WHILE YOU’RE ON EARTH.

If your life so far has played out like a horror movie or a tragic drama, that does not mean you ever have to play out that “movie plot” again. You can turn it all around and live the rest of your life as an inspirational story, a romantic comedy, a triumph-against-the-odds story. You can be any character you want to be. You are not bound by who you have been in the past. It is a character and you are free to change it.

When you were a child in a single day you were a pilot, a tiger, a royal figure, a super hero, and a magical creature. Recall how fully and easily you embodied these different characters. It was a rich, techni-color experience. You knew that you were an unlimited, dynamic, multi-dimensional, holographic being just as matter-of-factly as you knew your name and the color of your hair. You never completely loose that knowledge. It goes underground and can be resurrected.

Childhood is a preparation to play the same game actively in the world during adulthood. You are the writer, director, and lead actor in your own story. It is a story that Universal Intelligence is creating through you to experience. You are an individual and Universal Intelligence at the same time, just as a wave in the ocean is unique yet inseparable from the water. You are the waves and the ocean. You are free to end the story you are living right now. Free to throw it all out and start over. You are free to end the story in whatever way you can imagine.

Imagine right now a situation that you are ready to put an end to. Close you eyes and imagine a movie screen in front of you. See the scenarios of this situation play out like a movie you are watching, put songs to different scenes in your mind. As it ends, watch the credits roll, hear the final soundtrack. Have fun with it, make yourself laugh. Remind yourself that the situation is a movie and you have chosen to end it and start something new.

We create our reality through feeling and attract and repel through emotion. Whatever has a strong, focused charge around it is what solidifies into physical form. It is important to focus your attention on what it would feel like to play out a new story line to your life. For example, you don’t like your current job anymore and are longing to do your dream job. What would it feel like in your body to have your dream job? Would you feel peaceful, happy, and fulfilled? The more time you spend generating those emotions inside of you, the faster you will attract your dream job. It is a scientific fact that everything is energy. Peace, joy, happiness, and fulfillment are specific frequencies of energy. If you feel those ways when you imagine your dream job, then your dream job lives at those vibrational frequencies. If you hang out consistently in emotions of anger, frustration, cynicism, and fear you will stay right where you are. Emotional intensity creates physical density. Live as if what you already desire has happened. Step into a new character. Keep at it. Clean up excess baggage. The time is now. Don’t waste another minute. See what it is like to accept everything that is written here as if it were as natural as “The sky is blue. The floor is solid. The ocean is wet.” Know it matter-of-factly, something you almost take for granted because you are so sure of it.

Play with this, see what happens, stay open to paradox, and practice humility, gentleness, and wonder.

I was listening today to a talk given by Dr. Robert Holden called Shift Happens. One of the main things that struck me about it was his take on self-improvement - that how we begin something will be how we end it. If we come to self-improvement with an attitude that there is something wrong with us that we need to fix in order to step-up to life in a good way we will always end up feeling there is more to fix - we never “get there”. In all the good intentions to bring the best of who we are to life - with all our love for humanity and the world - that attitude is actually unkind - that constant dialogue of how we’ve gotta be better - if it were coming from the outside - like from a spouse - it’d be grounds for divorce.

He talked about practicing instead self-acceptance - where we relax into a deep knowing of our true nature - where we approach ourselves with love, curiosity, kindness and respect.

I feel that perhaps this self-improvement comes out of the fact that we are deeply caring people and it can be so disheartening to see that the vast majority of the problems on the planet right now came out of human behavior. It can trigger a feeling that we must improve ourselves to turn things around - that we have to fix ourselves because we keep messing things up so terribly on this planet. But, if you are around someone who is in the mindset of self-improvement and one who is in the mindset of self-acceptance which is more inspiring, healing, restorative to be around? The great mystics are approaching their path from the viewpoint of self-acceptance - even if they are doing many of the same practices as “self-improvers” their consciousness that they bring into the practice is one of deepening self-acceptance.

I am listening right now to the singer John Legend - he sings “Save Room for me. Save room for my love. Save room for a moment to be with me. ” It’s so powerful to drop into that safe, kind place of self-acceptance where we have saved room for ourselves - to live, to breath, to make mistakes, to grow, to love, to fall away from love and return again.
